BENTON HALL & THE WILKES PLAYMAKERS

Steven Critz Theatre in Benton Hall Wilkes Playmakers, Inc, is an independent, non-profit, community theater company dedicated to the cultural enhancement of the children, adults and senior citizens of Wilkes County through theater.

Wilkes Playmakers was founded in 1990 by a dedicated group of local citizens who recognized a growing need to provide additional opportunities for area residents in all aspects of community theater. The organization is committed to expanding both the availability of and interest in the arts and drama in the Wilkes region of Northwestern North Carolina. Since its inception, Wilkes Playmakers has delighted and pleased local audiences of all ages. During this time, the Playmakers have produced performances of such notable dramas, musicals, comedies, and mystery productions as:
Steel Magnolias, Arsenic and Old Lace, Plaza Suite, Our Town, The King and I, The Diary of Anne Frank, A Street Car Named Desire, Night of January 16th, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Nunsence, The Miracle Worker, A Few Good Men, The 1940's Radio Hour, Guys and Dolls, Cemetery Club, Greater Tuna, and Oliver.

In June of 1994, Wilkes Playmakers, Inc. acquired a long-term lease from the Health Foundation, Inc. on the 1913 portion of the Old North Wilkesboro School building located on the corner of 3rd and "D" Streets in North Wilkesboro. The Old North Wilkesboro School facility was purchased by the Health Foundation, Inc. through a gift from Mr. Clarence Benton in memory of his wife, Lucille Rhodes Benton. The facility has been renamed "Benton Hall."

In the past, the Playmakers had not had a dedicated facility from which to stage their productions. The company had to use make-shift locations such as private basements, garages, and warehouses, often with no heat or air conditioning, to rehearse and prepare scenery and props. They then had to move to one of several rental stages in the county for performances.

Acquisition of this historic facility gives the Playmakers a permanent home. They have brought new life to this beautiful old three story red brick landmark, that for so many years has played such a prominent role in the day-to-day life of the town and county. An intimate 210 seat theatre has been beautifully restored on the second floor where the school's original auditorium was housed. These is space for a number of theater related functions including: dressing rooms, props, costumes, workshop, a children's theater, and a reception area. Additional space is available to house other local fine arts organizations.
