In the spring of 2003, Leatherwood will be hosting our Leatherwood Mountain Extreme Challenge Endurance race.
This is a one-day sanctioned event by the AERC (American Endurance Race Commission).
Competitors will come from all over the south east to race in this event. In the 1999 race, there were 50 horse and
rider teams that completed a 25 or 50 mile course through our beautiful trail system.
Endurance riding is a fast growing equine sport which requires much commitment and training. The horses are
strictly monitored by a team of vets prior to and throughout the race. The vets determine if the horse is fit to
continue approximately every 12 miles. The first horse across the finish line is the winner only if he passes the
vet check. In other words these horses and riders are incredible athletes!
Leatherwood was hailed as one of the premier rides in the southeast by many of last years competitors. Many
felt that the facilities surpassed anywhere they had previously been. Our terrain is very beautiful and challenging!
We look forward to becoming a place where endurance riders will come and train year round! The date for the
next ride is March 29, 2003. For further information contact Abbie Smith at (336) 973-5044 or email
